Mohamed Rajani Dr. Anita Rapone HON 308 February 3, 2009 Reading Critique 1 The understanding of the contemporary issues in the Middle East and the role of the United States requires a thorough reflection of its history. Without the adequate knowledge of historical events, we may be guilty of prejudicial judgment. Kwame Anthony Appiah’s “How Muslims Made Europe,” a review of God’s Crucibles: Islam and the Making of Modern Europe, 570- 1125 by David Levering Lewis , provides a historical account of the movement of Muslim Arabs in Spain to conquer other neighborhoods in Europe and their constant struggles with Frankish Christians, led by their warrior king Charlemagne, to shift the balance of power towards their respective sides. However, the Muslims are unable to maintain their stronghold due to increasing internal tensions and differences.
