Mohamed Rajani Dr. Anita Rapone HON 308 Feb 10 th , 2009 Reading Critique II The current conflict in the Middle East accentuates the need to understand the history of Palestine and the events leading to the creation of the State of Israel. While the history of the region is well documented, Ilan Pappe, author of A History of Modern Palestine, feels historians have not given an appropriate perspective, that of its people. Historians, he says, provide separate historical narratives of Palestine and Israel with both affiliations claiming their documentations as correct. While he drops short of refuting their part of the story, he does label it as not a very appropriate portrayal of the series of events. Furthermore, the author also delves into the definition of “modernization” in context of Modern Palestine challenging the notion that Modern Palestine began with their “first contact with Europe.” Writing through the laymen’s perspective, the book’s first chapter, “Fin de Siècle 1856- 1900,” highlights the events leading to the end of the nineteenth century.
