Weekly Study Assignment 2- Unit 3- CHEM XXI Nitrogen Power 1) In addition to NH 3 , nitrogen forms three other compounds with hydrogen that are useful as rocket propellants: N 2 H 4 , N 2 H 2 and N 4 H 4 (which does not form a ring with the N’s). Draw the Lewis structures of each and use these to comment on the bond strengths and lengths of the nitrogen-nitrogen bonds in each (remember that in general, triple bonds are stronger than double which are stronger than single). Also, assign an electron pair and molecular geometry to each N in all three structures. 2) Dinitrogen difluoride, N 2 F 2 , is the only stable, simple inorganic compound with an N=N bond. It exists as two different isomers (cis and trans), one which is polar and one which is non-polar. Draw the Lewis structures of each and identify the polar and non- polar isomers. Many times there are multiple resonance structures for molecules that are not energetically equivalent. When this is the case, there is a simple “back of the envelope”
