Weekly Study Assignment 2- Unit 3- CHEM XXI KEY Nitrogen Power 1) In addition to NH 3 , nitrogen forms three other compounds with hydrogen that are useful as rocket propellants: N 2 H 4 , N 2 H 2 and N 4 H 4 (which does not form a ring with the N’s). Draw the Lewis structures of each and use these to comment on the bond strengths and lengths of the nitrogen-nitrogen bonds in each (remember that in general, triple bonds are stronger than double which are stronger than single). Also, assign an electron pair and molecular geometry to each N in all three structures. N N H H N N H H H H N N N N H H H H bent trigonal pyramid bent trigonal pyramid The electron pair geometry for bent is trigonal planar in both cases and is tetrahedral for trigonal pyramid. The N-N bond in N 2 H 2 is a formal double bond and should be stronger than single bonds in the other 2. In N 2 H 4 the N-N bond is a single bond and in N 4 H 4 you have a mix of single and double bonds. Double bonds are shorter as well.
