Sociology: Main Ideas, People and Terms 1. Thorstein Veblen (1857-1929)- came up with the two views on workmanship: the instinct of workmanship and conspicuous consumption. a. Instinct of Workmanship- wanting to do something that is of value to our society, people praise you for the usefulness of your job, a sense of pride. b. Conspicuous Consumption- buying goods and making sure people see what you bought so everyone knows that you are important. 2. Economy of Scale (everyone)- sell as much as possible to everyone (advertising to the average man). 3. Economy of Scope (select few)- sell as much as possible to those with the most money (advertising to the rich). 4. Globalization- involves the movement of cities all throughout the world. Technology has made it possible for global business. Money can be transferred freely between nations, while people must have visas to travel internationally. 5. Export of Care Leads to Deskilling- nurses or other trained professionals will become nanny/housekeepers when they get to the U.S., but they are still making more now than they did then. The employees are looking to survive while the employers are looking to get luxury out of this deal. 6. C. Wright Mills (3 Questions): a. What is the structure of our society? And how does it divide up its necessary labor? b. Where does this society stand in human history? c. What varieties of men and women now prevail in this society and in this period? 7. 3 questions relating to Domestica a. What is the structure of our society? And how does it divide up its necessary labor? Basically all employee and employer relationship. Employers will take the person who will do the job with the lowest pay. The low-end jobs are mainly given to the new immigrants. Food brings out the public and private issues of the domestic work. b. Where does this society stand in human history? Women usually did the housework and now they are almost all involved in the workforce. Whites are used to having slaves and civil servants and now they have the minorities doing all of their meticulous work for low pay. The parents are also drifting away from raising their children and women no longer clean their own homes. c. What varieties of men and women now prevail in this society and in this period?
