Hock Fall 2008 SECOND TERM PAPER WRITING GUIDE In the second paper—again, 6-8 pages, double-spaced, and 12 pt Times Roman— you will interpret the story of the beheading of John the Baptist (Mark 6:17-28 [=p. 46 Ehrman]) in terms of the conventions of thought and behavior that governed peoples’ lives at the time of the composition of the gospel. You should have much of the evidence for these conventions (symposia, hetairai , and Cynic philosophy) already collected in your first paper. Now you will directly relate that evidence to the Markan passage. We suggest that you structure your paper as follows. In the Introduction state what you are going to do and how you will go about doing it (1/2 page). Then in the Body you should go through the passage verse by verse, identifying such things as characterization, plot, setting, and motivation and clarifying them by means of the conventions you discussed in the first paper (5-6 pages).
