Sociology CH4 03/03/2008 13:29:00 Groups and organizations  What are social groups  2 or more individuals  have to identify with one another and have interaction  categories and crowds  categories share a common status not a group  form of classification crowds are special type of association  group of individuals that are clustering together  may or may not interact with each other  these are to weak to be a social group  primary and secondary groups  primary  o small social groups  o long lasting and enduring relationships   o spend a lot of time together  o members are defined by who you are  o family structure  o bound out of emotion  o generally small in size but there isn’t a limitation

secondary group  o relationships are weak between members  o relations are short term  o defined by what we do  o task oriented groups  o large group  transformation of secondary group o a portion of the secondary group may become a primary group  society and primary groups  o studies of group conformity  group pressure  has ability to shape you  the ash study  o designed to see if people would conform  o a subject that had two other people that were in on the study that they  didn’t know what was in on it  o will conform to avoid being different milgram’s research  o willingness to follow a leader  o individuals are not going to question someone with higher education  Janis research
