Three ways to lower allelic diversity. There are several more. 1. Selection, especially breeding 2. A bottleneck (near-extinction) or extinction 3. Founder effect, where a small population moves to a new, isolated place

Genetic diversity of a crop cultivar is maximized by repeatedly out- crossing to wild individuals from different sub-species, and selecting from among these progeny without inbreeding. Diversity is also increased by adding man-made genes. Diversity is also increased by inducing natural mutation mechanisms, like transposon movement. How to increase the genetic diversity of a wild species?

Unformatted text preview: Not easy. Prevent extinction of subspecies. Cross endangered subspecies alleles back into more common wild subspecies so they are not lost. So, the landrace itself might be lost, but the alleles won’t. How to increase the genetic diversity of a genus. Prevent species extinctions and as above. Landraces are preserved by freezing seed or by preserving “tribal” activity, assumming that tribal activity includes proper crossing strategies. Remember: Extinction is the fate of >99.999% of all species that were ever on earth. There is very low chance that any species you know will still be around in 10 Mys except by human intervention....
