Linguistic variation ± Language varies over time , place , social strata and in the way people use language. ± i.e. diachronic differences (lang. history) ± Dialectal differences ± Societal differences ( sociolinguistics ) ± Language use ( pragmatics ) ± E.g. I might use language differently depending on where I am, what the topic is, who I’m taking to ( to whom I’m talking! )

More linguistic variation ± One or more of these factors are observed in… ± using different registers ± Using loan words ± from language contact situations. (e.g. Denglisch !) ± Sociolinguistics pretty much today subsumes dialectology and the language contact situation (i.e. when languages come into contact with each other)

Linguistic variation ± All this is what this course is about. ± At the same time, I want to improve your German and your understanding of how it works (and bits about all languages), thus the added reader by Bastian Sick—der Zwiebelfisch (your first assignment is to find out what that word means!). ± And wait until we get to the phonetics of German!

Linguistic variation ± All these topics won’t get equal time. Your text isn’t set up that way. ± Also, we won’t press ourselves to finish everything in the text.

Linguistic variation ± As far as the dialects go, we’ll listen to, and dissect, some Bavarian, Austrian, Swabian, Lëtzebuergesch (= Luxemburger German), Westphalian Platt, and Swiss German. ± You will also be able to listen to more dialects, also to a discussion of German Umgangssprache, on other CD’s. ± Two articles discuss Austrian standard German ± We’ll also briefly look at Viennese (Wiener Dialekt) since some of us will be there together in a few months!

Also, you must ± (1) complete and turn in eight linguistic worksheets, and ± (2) write four one-paged (typed) summaries on what you learned from the Sick articles and one dialect CD, due in the third, fifth, seventh, and ninth weeks , respectively--and ± (3) take a final OR write a paper (your choice). ± Oh, and speak up a little in class!
