I NTRODUCTION TO G ERMAN D RAMA G ERMAN 119A: W INTER 2009 Schedule: M/W 3:00-4:15 Location: Haines A76 Instructor : Dr. Lisa Parkes Office : Royce 331 (310) 206-3977 Office Hours: M/W 10-11am Email: [email protected] The German Play Production series is designed for students to focus on German language and pronunciation through the study and performance of German drama. Introduction to German drama and drama theory (119A) is the preparatory course for a production of one play (to be selected by students) in 119B. Part A is a prerequisite for part B; it is also expected that most students will continue from A to B. Readings are in German and English. No previous theater experience is required. Content variable: may be repeated for credit. 119A: Introduction to German Drama (5 units). Course Description: Prerequisite: German 3 (or see instructor for permission) This course introduces students to 4 German plays: Gotthold Ephraim Lessing’s Emilia Galotti , Heinrich von Kleist, Der zerbrochene Krug , Bertold Brecht’s Puntila und sein Knecht Matti, and Wolfgang Borchert’s Draußen vor der Tür, and to some of the different types of drama. We will concentrate on a tragedy and a comedy in the first half of the course, and on modern dramatic techniques (Epic Theater, Expressionist). Students will read, discuss and analyze plays in detail, practice performing roles in class, and write short analytical responses in German or English to the readings. In preparation for the production of a play in part B, students will work on acting techniques by working in groups on producing a scene from one of the plays, and by practicing role-playing and improvisation. Students will also work intensively on their language skills by practicing pronunciation in class and individually over Wimba (on course website). One of the plays will be selected for
