Executions in French towns, mass military campaign against Catholics Infernal soldiers – smoke out insurgents, Catholic warriors Beginning of democracy in Europe 30-40 000 lives march-august 1789 July 14 1789 Power vacuum French were in bankrupt – owing to the Americans, Independence War In 50 years – critique of monarch power King summoned the national assembly constitution King constitutionally attacked Monarchy had been morally and religiously weakened King impotence Maria Antoinette – adultery Nobility had been attacked in pornographic materials (Marquii de Sade) (Dangerous Liasons) Monks/Nobility – perverts Influential fraction in the Catholic elite (King sided with the wrong side – Jesuits 17 th century) King did not attack repressively against the Bastille incident, (governor gruesomely murdered) National Assembly --> central but frail institution Sanculottes – Marat, Paris Commune, Girondine Different groups claimed legitimacy (political) Outside forces would pressure the National Assembly Revolution strikes the left wing 1794 – Robespierre was arrested and guillotined
