We set x = r and z = s as parameters for the free variables, then w - x + z = 2 gives w = 2 + r - s and y - z = 1 gives y = 1 + s for the leading variables, so the solution is [ w, x, y, z ] = [2 + r - s, r, 1 + s, s ]. 2. Sample exam, #7 from Fall 2006: To decide whether ±v is in the span of ±v 1 and ±v 2 , we use the augmented matrix [ ±v 1 ±v 2 | ±v ] (see week 5 slides or Text Example 2.18, p. 90-91).
