Electric Field Lines A convenient aid for visualizing electric ±eld patterns is to draw lines pointing in the direction of the ±eld vector at any point. These lines are called electric ±eld lines. For a lone positive charge the ±eld lines would radiate outward symmetrically. At any point, the electric ±eld vector will point in the direction of the electric ±eld lines.

Electric Field Lines For a lone negative charge the feld lines would radiate inward symmetrically. The number o± lines per unit area is proportional to the strength o± the electric feld in the given region. Know the electric feld lines well ±or the lone positive and lone negative charges. All other charge confgurations will be combinations o± lone positive and lone negative charges.

Electric Field Lines There are some rules for electric ±eld lines: 1) Electric ±eld lines can only begin on positive charges. 2) Electric ±eld lines can only terminate on negative charges. 3) No two ±eld lines can cross.
