Assignment 3 - Problem 2 Introduction Broadband over Power Lines, sometimes referred to as BPL, is an emerging concept that would allow internet data to be transmitted over utility power lines. With BPL a person is able to plug a computer into any electrical outlet in the home and be instantly connected to the internet. The connection speed would not be lessened by the new form of transmittal. Data can be transferred at speeds of 500 kilobits and three megabits per second. Though it will take time before this technology can be implemented, it is being tested in a few towns around the United States and the United Kingdom. How the Technology Works BPL is as the name suggests, broadband service sent by use of power lines. BPL will access the electricity grid in a city. Then it will be wired in individual homes to provide direct "plug in" broadband service through electricity sockets instead of by phone or cable TV lines. Application and Business Opportunities for the Technology This new technology can connect small offices, branches and telecommuters. BPL
