Chapter 1 5. What is an information system? Distinguish between a computer, a computer program, and an information system. What is the difference between data and information? An information system is a set of interrelated components that collect or retrieve, process, store, and distribute information to support decision making and control, information systems may also help managers and workers analyze problems, visualize complex subjects, and create new products. Computers provide the equipment for storing and processing information. Computer programs are sets of operating instructions that direct and control computer processing. An information system has the foundation both computers and computer programs to create a system that can store, process, and collect information in order to better assist the user. Data is streams of raw facts representing events occurring in organizations or the physical environment before they have been organized and arranged into a form that people can understand and use. Information is data that has been organized and arranged into a usable form that people can use and understand. 6. Visit job-posting websites such as Monster.com or Hotjobs.com and find two descriptions of jobs in your major areas that require some information systems knowledge. In the accounting and marketing fields, it is necessary to have knowledge of current and future changes in information technology like hardware and
