E. Annie Proulx Born August 22, 1935, Proulx was the oldest of five children . Her mother, an artist, taught her to notice every detail of her surroundings which later contributed to her vivid stories. She attended Colby College in Maine for a short time in the 50’s before leaving to waitress and work at the post office. Eventually, she received her bachelor’s degree in history and graduated cum laude from the University of Vermont and went on to receive a master’s degree from Sir George Williams University in Montreal in 1973. Her first two marriages had ended without success and by 1975, her third marriage also ended in divorce, leaving her to single-handedly raise her three sons and a daughter. Proulx had a passion for fishing, hunting, canoeing and other outdoor various activities . When she wasn’t writing, she loved to be outdoors. She moved to Vermont and began working as a freelance journalist . She wrote on various subjects and her works first appeared in magazines such as
