Everyone knows what attention is. It is the taking possession by the mind, in clear and vivid form, of one out of what seem several simultaneously possible objects or trains of thought. Focalization, concentration, of consciousness are of its essence. It implies withdrawal from some things in order to deal effectively with others, and is a condition which has a real opposite in the confused, dazed, scatterbrained state which in French is called distraction- William James, 1890 What is Attention? b We process every piece of our environment s We have to select aspects of our environment to attend to b Amount of attention required depends on the complexity of the task/environment. s Driving on a wide open country road requires less attention than driving on the 401 just before rush hour. b Selective Attention : s Must focus out attention on one or a few tasks or events rather than on many ATTENTION ATTENTION Treismans Attenuation Theory The volume is turned down for unimportant information.
