DEFINITION Persistently harmful thoughts, feelings & actions that are deviant, distressful or dysfunctional Psychopathology Stereotypes b Stereotypes are commonly perpetuated, especially through film: 1. The mental patient as the rebellious free spirit 2. The homicidal maniac 3. The patient as seductress 4. The narcissistic parasite Psychopathology Stereotypes b The presumption of traumatic etiology s A single traumatic event (often in childhood) will precipitate a later mental illness b The schizophrenogenic parent s Parents (mother) is often responsible for their childrens illness b Harmless eccentricity is often labeled as mental illness and inappropriately treated Understanding Disorder b Historically s the devil made me do it - illness was due to evil spirits s Cut a hole in the skull of sufferer to release the evil b Trephination b Medical Model (1800-current) s Mental illness has physical causes s Sickness of the mind due to inhumane treatment A mental illness (psychopathology) needs to be diagnosed on the basis of its symptoms and treated through therapy , which may include treatment in a psychiatric hospital . Axis I Is a Clinical Syndrome present? s Anxiety, Mood, Eating, Dissociative Disorders, Schizophrenia Axis II Is a Personality Disorder or Mental Retardation present? Axis III Is there a General Medical Condition? s Diabetes, hypertension, arthritis Axis IV Are Psychosocial or Environmental concerns also present?
