Justin Joseph 2/22/2005 Prof. Lawrence REVISED Essay #3 While reading The New York Times, I saw an article that I felt strongly related to Pope’s An Essay on Man . The article discussed the suicide bombings on the eve of the Shiite Holy Day. The article not only helped better my understanding of Pope’s essay, but also the situation in Baghdad. The article indirectly suggests the Sunnis could be responsible for the suicide bombings. If the Sunnis were indeed responsible, then Pope would argue these terrorists are doing exactly what they should be doing. The Sunnis believe what they are doing is right in the eyes of God. They believe that the Shiites are disgracing Islam and Allah by submitting to a democratic system. Pope states that in “erring Reason’s spite, one truth is clear, WHATEVER IS RIGHT” (517). Many people would argue morals and ethics against suicide bombings. However, according to Pope, the terrorists killing people is ‘right’, even if it goes against logical reasoning.
