Unformatted text preview: LBS 172L Chemical Kinetics Week of February 26 2008 2 Notices • Condition of Labs – Balances not left clean – Benches around balances extremely dirty – Glassware left lying around • No ring stands should be left on benches with instruments (FTIR) or balances 3 Laboratory Equipment • Care of Lab Equipment – pH meters • Need to keep probes whetted!!! • Leave in solution – Ocean Optics • Do not leave turned on • Lamps can burn out 4 Kinetic Lab • Note Concentration of Bleach is 6.15% • Prepare a Beer Lambert Plot – Must make plot and present to LA – Linear – 0 intercept – Deduct subjective points if not done • Use the Spectrometer to monitor disappearance of color as dye reacts with bleach (sodium hypochlorite: NaOCl) • Do several runs with different concentration 5 Kinetic Lab cont’d • Determine concentrations by spectroscopy using Beer’s Law • Determine the rate law for the reaction between bleach and one of two dyes (C7 – red; C6 – Green) • Determine the rate constant for the same reaction. 6 Kinetics Theory For a reaction A + 2B → 2C + D Reaction rate is defined by: •...
