LB 172 Spring 2009 Dr. R. LaDuca Group Project “DOUBLE-EDGED CHEMICALS” The decision about whether a chemical product is brought to market is not an easy one in many cases. Very often, a chemical may have extremely beneficial uses but may be poisonous in larger amounts, have limited scope but severe biological side-effects, have toxic break-down products, or have problematic disposal and long-term storage. Quite often the potential dangers are unpredictable and not identified prior to sale. Once in the market unexpected problems can and do surface. After all, laboratory testing can only go so far in being able to identify potential difficulties. If problems arise, at what point should the product be pulled and what legal culpability is present with the manufacturer? Your job is to present a risk/benefit analysis of one of the compounds from the list below in both an oral and poster presentation format. (You may bring your own idea to your professor for approval.) Your recitation section will then vote on whether or not the
