Food from Puerto Rico is a blend of Spanish, African, Taíno, and American. Puerto Ricans call their cuisine "cocina criolla". The original inhabitants of the island lived on a diet of corn, tropical fruit, and seafood. In 1493, the Spanish added beef, pork, rice, wheat, and olive oil to the island's diet. Spanish planted sugarcane and imported slaves from Africa, who brought with them okra and taro. The blending of flavors and ingredients passed from generation to generation among the different ethnic groups that settled on the island, has resulted in the Puerto Rican cuisine currently. Lunch and dinner usually start with an appetizer or soup; Garbanzos are often added to give flavor, body, and texture to Puerto Rican soups.
