February 12 th Tectonics II: The Model A)   Definitions - Tectonics: Large scale movement and deformation of the crust - Plate tectonics: A theory, a bunch of tectonics - Upper rigid plate: lithosphere . It may warp on a large scale, or crumple at the edges. - Asthenosphere : Below the lithosphere, a plastically deformable region - 7 large and ‘many’ smaller plates. * Large plates: Eurasian, African, North American, South American, Pacific,  Indian, and Australian. B) Characteristics: - Plates move 1-12 cm per year. Apparently all of them are moving. - A plate can have either mantle and continental crust (CCTL) or mantle and oceanic  crust (OCTL); but usually it has both. - Can change size or shape over time. C) Kinds of Margins: - There are three distinctive kinds: 1) Divergent : Edges moving apart * New lithosphere is created * Earthquakes (not big) and volcanoes * Volcanic rock is basalt (dark, rich in Fe, poor in Si)
