Observe several of the samples of woody stems and identify: nodes, internodes, lateral buds, terminal bud, leaf scars, terminal bud scar, leaf and lenticels . Answer the following questions. 1. Do the lenticels appear the same on different plant species of woody stem material? Lenticels will be different in shape, size and number depending on the plant species. 2. What is the function of the lenticel in woody stems? Basic function is to allow gas exchange to occur to the deeper tissues of the stem. 4. When looking at a woody stem cross section the bulk of the “woody” material is composed of what type of tissue? ( bark, phloem, cambium, xylem, pith, cortex) The bulk of woody tissue and indeed what we call wood is XYLEM 5. A woody stem would most likely be from a monocot or dicot plant? Dicot plants 6. Why? Dicot plants can undergo additional or secondary growth and can be perennial plants
