Psych 170 Exam II Fight-or-Flight Response -normal response to stress- Autonomic Nervous System- involuntary activities of organs Hypothalamus (danger) Endocrine System- network of glands to release hormones Process is carried out through two pathways: Sympathetic Nervous System o o After fear, stimulation of Parasympathetic Nervous System Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal Pathway o Pituitary Gland secretes adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) o ACTH activates adrenal cortex- releases cortisol o Cortisol signals hippocampus to turn off arousal PTSD Usually starts as Acute Stress Disorder o o Symptoms o Reexperiencing traumatic event: nightmares, thoughts, memories, etc. o Avoidance: avoiding related thoughts, feelings, or conversations o Reduced responsiveness: feeling dazed, poor memory, derealization o Triggers o Any age, Co morbidity (comes with other disorders), women 2x’s o Risk Factors o Personality People respond to stress with positive attitudes (resiliency/hardiness) enabling them to carry on their lives Those who have poor resiliency/hardiness are more likely to develop stress disorders o Childhood Experiences: Help build the personality styles or attitudes o Social Support: Strong social and family support systems to rely on o Severity of Trauma: Severity may overpower a nurturing childhood, positive attitude, and social support Treatment o Drug Therapy Antianxiety drugs help control tension Antidepressants reduce nightmares, panic attacks, and flashbacks
