Unformatted text preview: Park Long Philosophy and Science of Emotion Oct. 13 2016 The emotion I intend to s tudy is love, in all its forms. W hat is s o c ompelling about this emotion is its c omplexity. From a biological perspective, the bodily c hanges as well as c hemical changes that occur when an individual experiences ‘love’ is fascinating. A portion of this paper will be dedicated to s earching for explanations for the biological aspect of this emotion: the reasons for butterflies in our s tomachs, our s weaty palms and flushed c heeks. This s ection will examine the bodily processes behind what we c all love. This paper will first determine a working definition of the emotion of love from a psychological perspective. Modern vernacular and c olloquial terms have m ade the word ‘love’ casual in s ome s enses. The way one “loves” a dress is different from the way one loves their favorite book, and both differ from the ways in which one m ay love another person. The philosophical and anthropological aspect of this paper will examine the ways in which we love one another; romantically, platonically, familially and s o forth. Additionally, this paper will analyze why we fall in love at all; this paper will attempt to c onclude how and why we fall in love. An interesting anthropological topic to further investigate is how perceptions of and attitudes towards love have c hanged over time. This m ay include examining why it was appropriate for young women to m arry in their early teens m any c enturies ago and why it is no longer appropriate now, the history and development of m arriage as an institution, and queer and non­monogamous relationships. A final topic to be researched in this paper is the value of love in differing c ultures; for example, the emphasis placed on romantic love by American m edia. ...
