Ethan Towsley 1 Advanced Literature and Composition Period 7 Mrs. Sockey 6/16/16 Steps From Totalitarianism (Essay E) In our modern day society, we are relatively close to both George Orwell’s 1984 , and Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World . However, unlike in these books, being close to both of them means we are close to neither, for their critical differences do not allow them to coexist. In 1984 , the media is controlled by the state, which is used to dissuade any thoughts disagreed with by the Party. Everything seen is a story that has been doctored and manipulated to represent the views of the party, without any possible drawbacks. In Brave New World , the media is also controlled, but on a class by class basis. In modern society, media is controlled, not by the government in power, rather by corporations with their own beliefs and representations. Prime examples of this are the contrasts between CNN and Fox. The target audience of CNN are predominantly liberal democrats, whereas Fox is geared towards conservative republicans. They both report on the same stories, however their views on them are different. That is one of the critical differences that separate us from either a Brave New World or 1984 society. Both CNN and Fox are funded by or fund major lobbyist communities. Because both are partially in control of the Government, neither have control. At the same time, the tug of war between them allows neither to gain more ground to become in power. The conflict is a
