SINGLE-FACTOR EXPERIMENTS AND DIFFERENTIAL DESIGNS Single-factor experiments have one independent variable. Single-factor differential designs have one grouping variable such as gender or ethnicity, which is not a true independent variable. The term “single-factor” applies to both. These designs are analyzed using the same statistical tools, but strong causal conclusions can only be made from experiments. Designs with two levels of the single factor Two levels (e.g. control group vs treatment group) give an improvement over one level, because the essence of research is comparison: finding that the factor either makes a difference to the DV or does not. However, one-level “demonstrations” are found in everyday life: o They are common in advertising. e.g. the speed reading course and its “resulting” 90% comprehension o Advertising also gives us laughable “spin” on nonsignificant comparisons. e.g. “Crest is unsurpassed in fighting cavities.” Statistical tools for comparing two levels of a factor:
