ETHICS II – RESPONSIBILITIES OF RESEARCHERS - BLINDING The Social Aspect of Research Again: Blinding and Double Blinding Social cognitive processes – beliefs, responses to perceived demand characteristics, expectancies - of both the subject and the researcher can affect research in ways that distort the data. These cognitions are difficult to control, in at least two senses: First, they may be unintentional. Second, we need techniques to minimize their influence in order to have a good design. Single blinding (e.g. placebo) guards against confounding due to different demand characteristics or expectancies created in the subjects ’ minds by the different experimental conditions. Double blinding guards against beliefs or expectancies in the researchers ’ minds, whether they are unintentional or not.
