IR 210 22/01/2008 14:03:00 There has never been a pre-social Hobsian world – “nasty, brutish, and short” Hunter-Gatherer Bands originated from Africa and then migrated to al the ends of  the Earth Units 1 (HGBs) Their members numbered only 15-75 They were mobile, but they still had a sense of  territory They did not store up surpluses of production. In times of shortage, they  shared o Not economists, but rather had to rely on each other –  interdependence They had to maintain regular contact with an average of 19 other HGBs to  form a stable mating group o Genetic diversity as well as communication and alliances Interaction Capacity 1 They had rafts but no wheeled vehicle; nor had they domesticated horses or  camels yet They developed the  social  technologies of language and proximity o Hexagonal pattern They had to work hard to  construct  society through relations with their  neighbors o Risk sharing society They colonized almost the entire planet o HGBs inhabited every type of terrain Process 1 (cannot differentiate sectors) Marriage served to bond different bands together o Alliances bonding o Doesn’t happen between common people in states today
