9/25/07 PHYS 101-02 Newton’s Laws, are they important in today’s world? The more pressing question is not if Newton’s Laws are important in today’s world; instead it is wondering how this question could possibly be asked. There are millions of examples of how each of Newton’s Laws of motion plays an essential role in the world around us. A common example of each law is given below. In general, Newton’s First Law of Motion states that an object is either at a state of rest or moves at a constant speed unless a force is exerted on the object. A very good modern-day application of this Law is when an object is in flight. There are four separate forces that act on a plane in flight – lift, weight, thrust, and drag [1]. As long as the plane is at a constant altitude, which it usually is, the forces of lift and weight cancel each other out. If an aircraft is also moving at constant speed, thrust and drag forces cancel as well.

### What students are saying

• As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

• I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

Dana University of Pennsylvania ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
