11/6/07 PHYS 101-02 Ch. 12 Exercises 6. Do radio waves travel at the speed of light, at the speed of sound, or somewhere in between? Radio waves travel at the speed of light. It is their frequency that varies. 9. Short wavelengths of visible light interact more frequently with the atoms in glass than do longer wavelengths. Does this interaction time tend to speed up or slow down the average speed of light in glass? The interaction time slows town the average speed of light in glass. 14. Fire engines used to be red. Now many of them are yellow-green. Why the change of color? When the human eye has adapted to darkness, red is the most difficult color to distinguish. On the contrary, yellow is one of the colors to which the eye is most sensitive. Therefore, the change in color should increase awareness of a fire engine’s presence and encourage people to be very careful. 26. Why can’t we see stars in the daytime? During the day, sunlight travels through the least amount of atmosphere to reach the earth’s surface. This means that the sun shines the brightest at this point, outshining all of the stars in the sky. Therefore, we can’t see these stars until the sunlight disappears. 32. You’re explaining to a youngster at the seashore why the water is cyan colored. The youngster points to the whitecaps of overturning waves and asks why they are white. What is your answer?
