Ebrahimi,1 Marjan Ebrahimi Proff. Magnuson WRT 104 2/28/08 Summary “Of Mr. Booker T. Washington and Others” Throughout “Of Mr. Booker T. Washington and Others”, W.E.B Du Bois creates a sort of “time line” of events that occurred between 1750 and the time he wrote this piece in 1903. He covers the subject of slavery in the South and North, revolts and revenge, different revolt groups, specific leaders, a particular revolution (the Revolution of 1876), and finally and most importantly, Du Bois focuses on Booker T. Washington. Du Bois’ piece is a persuasive, historical, perspective, which describes the importance of criticizing Booker T. Washington’s program and his ideas on black oppression. The main focus of this paper is to discuss and analyze Du Bois’ article on the significance of criticism. Mr. Washington believed that the American Negroes should give up fighting for: political power, insistence on civil rights, and higher education of Negro youth. Instead, he believed, that they should focus their attention on industrial education. However, Mr. Washington did not realize that this can’t be possible without having people of higher education to teach the industrial classes, and he wanted to limit the advancement of higher education. This is a part of Booker T. Washington’s triple paradox. Other issues of his argument include that he was pushing to have Negro artisans become business men and property owners, yet this was impossible without the right of suffrage; also, Mr. Washington believed that the American Negro should have self-respect, but still be silent and submissive to civic inferiority (42, Du Bois). The author feels that Mr. Washington helped aid the Negroes develop a certain status but did not help them achieve equality.
