Science notes <39/7the 4 inner planets, they're prettysmallcompared to the outer planets. Theinner planets arerocky. This is because they are made of asolid, rocky crust.Because they're solid, the inner planets are verydense. Now, the innerplanets have veryfew moons. As a matter of fact,MercuryandVenus don'thaveany moons, whileEarthhasone moon,Marshastwo. The inner planetsrotate slowlyon their axis.Earthspins thefastestof theinner planets, completing one rotation in about24 hoursin one day. Now,because they're closer to the sun, the inner planets complete one revolutionfasterthan theouter planets. Mercury, theclosestplanet to the sun takesjust88days to orbit the sun. The Earth, well, we probably know, it takes365days, or one year, to revolve about the sun. Of the inner planets Mercury isthesmallestplanet and the closest to the sun.Mercury!-----------------The interior is mainly made of dense iron. Now, Mercury has virtually noatmosphere, because it's high daytime temperature causes gas particles tomove really quickly. And it's small mass does not have enough gravity tohold these particles on the planet. The planet has huge temperature ranges, because it's so close to the sun, but the heat is lost quickly at night, due tothe lack of atmosphere. Now, several probes have been sent there. Mariner10 sent back photographs that show the surface. has flat planes and craters.Messenger was launched in 2004, settled into orbit around Mercury in 2011,after several trips past Earth, Mercury, and Venus. The Messenger probe willprovide the first new close-up data about Mercury in about 30 years.Venus !----------Let's take a look at Venus next. Now, Venus is sometimes called Earth's twin, because it's similar to the Earth in size, mass, and density, and internalstructure. So Venus rotates the opposite of most other planets. It rotatesfrom east to west, which is the opposite of most other planets and moons.Scientists think this is because Venus was struck by a large object thatchanged the direction of its rotation. Now, Venus has a very thickatmosphere, mostly carbon dioxide, surrounded by clouds of sulfuric acid. The pressure of the atmosphere is about 90 times that of Earth. Venus alsohas the hottest surface of any planet, because carbon dioxide traps heatvery well. The probes that have been sent there, they include Magellan, which mapped Venus's surface. And confirmed that it's covered in rock.Magellan also discovered many volcanoes and broad plains formed by lavaflows.
Earth has three layers-- a solid, rocky crust, a hot molten mantle, and adense core of iron and nickel. Earth is the only planet that contains liquidwater on its surface. Its atmosphere contains many different gases, but Earthis the only planet rich in oxygen. And this is required to support theabundance of living things.
