Emancipation Daniel Paine – established a school in Charleston, which was later shut down Les Jeunes du Colour – Haitians that attempt to form their own identity as free blacks in the slave holding states Free black slave holders– roughly 3,500 black families owned slaves during the antebellum period Ex: William Ellison- In 1860 William Ellison was South Carolina's largest Negro slave owner About a year into the Civil War, abolitionists are annoyed that there has been no emancipation proclamation. Lincoln states that this war is not about slavery but instead saving the Union. Lincoln will do whatever it takes to save the Union A. Military a. General Benjamin Butler –trying to figure out what to do with the slaves that were coming to his lines. Decided that he would seize them as property or contraband. b. General John C. Fremont –August 1861 issued an order which would free slaves of all rebels. c.
