Kristina Madore, Mina Park, Emmeline Capel, Brittany Rolls February 25, 2008 Sustainability Project Proposal The topic that we are focusing on is a comparison between the natural phenomenon of converting light into mechanical energy and the recent man-made techniques mimicking the plants that do so in a similar process. Photosynthesis is the process by which plants convert light energy from the sun into mechanical energy to produce sugar from carbon dioxide and water to survive. Photovoltaics is the process in which humans turn light energy from the sun into electrical energy using solar panels that imitate the natural procedure that plants go through. As of current, the technology that man has made is not efficient enough to produce enough electricity through this process to power the entire world. Our focus will be placed upon the effort that needs to be taken to provide the world with this beneficial artificial energy source. This process of alternative energy, by way of solar power, mimics the natural biological phenomenon of creating mechanical energy from solar power by plants, some bacteria, and some protists. During this process, these organisms use the energy from sunlight to produce sugar,
