Psychology 101 Module 44 Free association - Freud told patients to relax and say whatever came to mind Psychoanalysis - Freud’s theory of personality and the associated treatment techniques The mind is like an iceberg , mostly hidden the unconscious region contains thoughts, wishes, feelings, and memories which we are unaware of Nothing is accidental according to Freud Human personality arises from a conflict between our aggressive, pleasure-seeking biological impulses and the internalized social restraints against them (personality comes about trying to resolve this conflict) Id- a reservoir of unconscious psychic energy constantly striving to satisfy basic drives to survive, reproduce, and aggress operates on the pleasure principle - if not constrained by reality it seeks immediate gratification Ego - as it develops, young children learn to cope with the real world reality principle - seeks to gratify the id’s impulses in realistic ways that will bring long-term pleasure
