Readings: Reader: Brian Locke, “Here comes the Judge: the Dancing Itos and the Televisual Construction of the Enemy Asian Male” Thesis: The essay seeks to disrupt the black and white binary of contemporary racial discourse in the US by showing how visual markers of “Asian ness” plays a central role in these representations. By showing how visual markers of “Asian ness” plays a central role in the representations of Lance Ito in the Tonight Show, the black and white binary of contemporary racial discourse in the U.S. is disrupted. The Dancing Ito skits were very popular Jazz connotes spontaneity, agility, and cool—all traits sought by The Tonight Show o Jazz is deeply inflected by race The Tonight Show relied on the appearance of spontaneity, signified by the presence of Marsalis o Brandford Marsalis was Jay Leno’s original bandleader, he helped to explain how television deploys race to fit its programming needs and in turn establishes a critical contect for reading the show’s representations of Ito o Maraslis’s lack of smiling left to an abrupt arrest of the shows attempt to be spontaneous. The smile connotes agreement; with it, it lets the viewers know everything is as it should be. He was fired due to his lack of smiling and was replaced by Kevin Eubanks By comparing Eubanks’s smile and his own lack of one, Marsalis indicates that The Tonight Show codes blackness in explicitly stereotypical visual terms The Tonight Show host’s authority rests upon his ability to appear confident, agile, and witty The real spontaneity upon which jazz thrives can be highly disruptive in a talk show setting Prior to The Tonight Show , Leno made a name for himself as a political comedian The polarized black and white structure of racial discourse renders the status of any position that is neither “black” nor “white” more uncertain, or at times even invisible, as a racial position. The structure of racial discourse thus creates a space in which The Tonight Show can deploy a racist parody without invoking the vexing issue of race or provoking charges of racism The costuming of the Dancing Itos gives the overall impression that the Itos hide themselves deliberately, make themselves inscrutable: the glasses, the thick black mustache and beard look like a mask o The masks in the Dancing Itos skits signify the inscrutability of Japanese men The show codes the Dancing Itos as Japanese figures who hide their own unique racial signifiers and thus render themselves inscrutable Asians have been coded in U.S. popular culture as a threat, a people who keep their motives and means well hidden The idea of the racialized sidekick=perform in a way to support notion of the
