Samantha Katz April 24, 2008 Professor Quail Hello, my name is Brian Montopoli and I have been a political reporter for CBSNews.com since September 2007. Previously, I was the editor of Public Eye, the CBS News blog. I am here to discuss the fact that Dateline’s “To Catch a Predator” is not a show that enlightens viewers, but rather a show that exploits this serious situation to gather ratings. As a journalist I am in favor of the press being the watchdogs over society, but this show pushes that role too far. For those that are unfamiliar with the show is a series of hidden camera investigations by the television newsmagazine Dateline NBC devoted to the subject of identifying and detaining potential child sexual offenders who contact “minors” (or individuals whom they believe to be minors) over the Internet for sexual encounters. The investigations, which have all been reported by Dateline correspondent Chris Hansen and producer Lynn Keller, are conducted as an undercover sting operation with the help of online watchdog group Perverted-Justice. Since the third installment, law enforcement (Hansen, 2007) and other officials have also been involved in the operation, leading to the arrests of most individuals caught in the sting.
