Tanner Merwin English IV CP Comparison/Contrast Essay September 7, 2016 In the world of politics there are two very essential concepts that govern political thought and construct laws and policies. These two concepts are conservatism and liberalism. Their views and points of the government’s role in a democratic society have evolved through time, but the foundation of these principles have stood the test of time. There are many different degrees of liberalism and conservatism. Some individuals are radical and extreme while others stand on more of a neutral territory. However, many people of the current generation do not share political interest and are ignorant of the two political alignments. Becoming informed is imperative to a successful nation, and to the preservation of American democracy as we know it. Merriam Webster defines Conservatism as “any political philosophy that favors tradition (in the sense of various religious, cultural, or nationally- defined beliefs and customs) in the face of external forces for change, and is critical of proposals for radical social change.” It is the antithesis of liberalism. Conservatives, namely in America, hold views that comprise around the idea of minimal governmental interference in economy and society.
