This transport of chloride ions is essential to maintain an equilibrium of water in the body. A person that has cystic fibrosis experiences a buildup of viscous mucus in the lungs and intestinal tract, which can essentially suffocate a cystic fibrosis patient. Despite its deadly condition, cystic fibrosis persists in the population. There is evidence that a patient with cystic fibrosis has some immunity to diarrheal diseases, such as cholera. In one to two concise sentences, state why you would expect the frequency of cystic fibrosis allele in the general population to be higher or lower in the present day when compared with the frequency of cystic fibrosis in historical times plagued by cholera (such as 18 th century)?
