Authors of different genres use their writing skills to convey several different messages. Science fiction gives authors a way to address faults within society in a more consequential light.Through their writing, they express serious issues and problems that occur in today's community.Ray Bradbury uses this in his novel Fahrenheit 451. It is a story about a dystopian society in which they burn books to control the intelligence on the residence in the society. Kurt Vonnegut also uses this in “Harrison Bergeron”; a short story set in the year 2081 in which all American citizens are forced to become equal by “handicapping” them. Damon Knight also reveals issues about society in “The Country of the Kind”. It is a short story about an unstable man who committed a crime and has nonsensical punishments for doing so. Authors of science fiction reveal the issue of the dangers of technology, conformity, and the effect society has on mental health in the stories,Fahrenheit 451, “Harrison Bergeron”, and “The Country of the Kind”.In the novel Fahrenheit 451, Bradbury revealed the dangers of technology in society. Throughout the novel it was apparent that technology was a keen part of Mildred’s–the wife of the main character Montag–life. Instead of communicating with her husband she would often
listen to her “seashells”, which are small ear devices that play music and other radio programs throughout the day. “When they stepped out the car, she had the Seashells stuffed in her ears.
