Historical Background/Purpose: Channel Tunnel Although the announcement of the channel tunnel made its public debut on January 20, 1986, the concept of the channel tunnel has roots dating much further back. Even in the early nineteenth century there was seen a need to cross the sleeve. The purpose of the channel tunnel is to fulfill the wish of joining two lands that for many years have had their differences. In 1802 when a French engineer named Albert Mathieu- Favier proposed a tunnel to be built that would allow passengers to travel in horse drawn carriages moved by the light of oil lamps. There was to be constructed an island at the half way point between the two stops in order to allow the horses to receive some fresh air. This idea along with those of several others throughout the years was never implemented, mainly due to lack of financial and governmental support. After World War II there was once again much serious talk of attention being directed back towards the channel tunnel idea. In 1984 the British and French government joined together in a request to build a privately-funded link [W]. The digging of the tunnel took over seven years with the contributions of 13,000 workers [W].
