Colonial Society 1-22-08 I. The South (VA, NC, SC, & GA)- a. Three types of colonies: i. Corporate- Jamestown was a failure ii. Proprietary- one person/entity rules a colony (ex: Maryland and Lord Baltimore also NC and SC) iii. Royal- elite group with an appointed governor 1. House of Burgesses- advisors to the governor **Georgia was a military outpost or a buffer b/n the Spanish Florida and northern states** b. Tobacco- cash crop of the 17 th century (pipes, chewed, and snuff) i. 1640- 3 million pounds ii. 1660- 10 million pounds c. Disease i. Between 1622 and 1640, 15,000 European settlers arrived in Virgina—the population only reached 8,000 ii. Malaria was the main killer esp. in pregnant women d. Corruption i. Governor of Virginia- William Berkeley; gave land to his favorites in the House of Burgesses and exempt them from taxation; eventually stopped holding elections ii.
