Arabs/Moors owned half of Spain i. Opened sugar plantations in West Africa g. Enormous profits made—slaves were called “black gold” III. Olaudah Equiano- wrote a slave narrative a. From the Ibo nation in Nigeria b. Taken at the age of 11; passed from trader to trader i. Many slaves died before they made it to the ship— starvation, thirst, exhaustion, and suicide ii. Once they made it to the coast, slaves were put in stockades called “barracoons” iii. “Middle Passage”--on the ship, slaves were packed into the
