Tim Beachy (A04) Chapter 6 1. Differentiate between homosexuals, bisexuals, and heterosexuals. Homosexuals are attracted to members of the same sex, heterosexuals are attracted to the opposite sex, and bisexuals are attracted to both. (Donatelle, 2008, p. 175) 2. Define socialization. It is how a society shows what it expected of everyone. (Donatelle, 2008, p. 173) 3. Define sexual identity. It is a person’s sense of gender and sexuality. (Donatelle, 2008, p. 173) 4. Discuss the concept of androgyny. Androgyny is a high presence of gender-specific traits in someone. (Donatelle, 2008, p. 174) 5-6. List and describe 7 options for sexual expression. Celibacy is not doing anything sexual. Autoerotic behaviors are those in which the person pleasures themselves with masturbation or fantasies. Kissing and erotic touching is kissing and touching of erogenous areas. Manual stimulation is when one uses themselves or toys to stimulate. Oral-genital stimulation is when one uses their mouth to please. Vaginal intercourse is when a man inserts his penis into the vagina. Anal intercourse is insertion of the penis into the anus. (Donatelle, 2008, p. 186-187) 7-8. List and describe the 4 Phases of the Human Sexual Response. Excitement is when the genitals are engorged with blood and become aroused. Plateau is when the muscles tighten and responses get more intense. Orgasmic phase is the phase when the muscle tension reaches its peak and contractions occur. The resolution phase is when everything returns to normal. (Donatelle, 2008, p. 183-184) 9. What is the average length of time for the menstrual cycle in women? 28 days (Donatelle, 2008, p. 179) 10. In an average menstrual cycle, identify the days where fertilization may occur. Fertilization may occur during ovulation. (Donatelle, 2008, p. 179) 11. Describe the menstrual or proliferative, ovulation, and secretory phases of the fertility cycle. Proliferative is when the egg matures. Ovulation is when the egg is released. Secretory phase is when the egg and other tissues are expelled. (Donatelle, 2008, p. 179) 12. Discuss premenstrual syndrome and its effects on women. Premenstrual syndrome is the physical and mood changes that occur 1-2 weeks before menstruation. Women can have tender breasts, fatigue, irritability, weight gain, upset stomach, etc. (Donatelle, 2008, p. 179-
