Exam 1 Review Biomechanics Shear stress- force per unit area. The more you apply, the greater the shear strain. Shear stress and shear strain are related by the fluid's viscosity. Strain is a result of stress A solid won't respond to shear stress because it has internal forces that react back. A fluid must react, and it must flow. If there is a deformation in a solid, it can be reversed, where as in a fluid it cannot be reversed. In a solid, the deformation is a function of the force and in a fluid, the fluid continues to move as long as the force is applied. It is finite in a solid but infinite in a fluid. Constitutive laws- describe the properties of the constituents of a material and independent of size and shape of material. If you have the law, you can predict the deformation from an applied force for any structure of that material. Relates shear stress to shear rate. Viscosity is the proportionality constant.
