Mythology Notes- Metamorphosis Book One Everything was together, all elements, etc. A god came and separated the earth and sky. Humans made either from the Creator, or from the etherealness left in the earth. The earth was then molded into men by Prometheus 4 ages of mankind o Golden- everything was in harmony. Eternal spring. Earth provided for all needs. o Silver- Saturn was overthrown by Jupiter (Jove), and he showed all humans the other three seasons. Then arose the need for seeking shelter, etc. o Bronze- More prone to war and fighting, but people still did not know wickedness. o Iron- war and fighting. Worst of humans. Jove swore by Styx that he tried everything to rid them of evil, but the only way now was to wipe out mankind and save the earth. Make a flood to wipe out all humans and then create a new race of men. Story of Lycaon who tried to feed Zeus mortal flesh. Turned to a wolf Flood- Jove locked the north wind in a cave and south wind came out. Iris filled the rain clouds and Neptune summoned the seas. Everything was wiped out. Deucalion and Pyrrha were the only mortals left after the flood, and they rafted on Mt. Parnassus. They prayed to Gods and Themis to save them, and since they were good, the flood was ended. They did not know how to re-create the entire race, so they went to Themis. She said to them to leave her temple, veil their heads, loosen their clothes, and throw their mother’s bones behind them. This meant throw stones, and from these stones and the earth came the new humans. Earth created other life, including the giant Python that Apollo eventually killed with 1000 arrows, and then created the Pythian games as remembrance for his great deed. He chased her but she worshipped the eternal virgin Diana and wanted to be like her, so she cried to her father the river peneus to help, and was turned into a laurel tree. Apollo wore the laurel leaves in his hair and his bows, and made them the leaves for the conquering of emperors of rome. Jove saw Io leaving the River Inachus (her father) and he fell in love and tried to chase her but she ran, so he covered the earth in darkness and raped her in this artificial night. Juno saw the darkness and knew Jove was up to no good. She dispersed the darkness so Jove made Io into a white heifer to hide what he did. Juno loved the heifer so Jove had to give it to her and she put it under the care of 100-eyed Argus . She was allowed to graze in the daylight so she would follow her family and she finally traced her name in the dirt so they would recognize her. Jove sent Mercury to kill Argus. He played music and told story of Pan and the Naiad Syrinx . She was mistaken for Diana often, and she escaped from Pan when her water nymph sisters turned her into marsh reeds . Pan would sigh for her through the reeds. This is how the Syrinx reed came about. Argus fell
