Vocabulary Instructions: Answer all vocabulary words with two to three sentences of information Define Key Terms Mahatma Gandhi: Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was the preeminent leader of the Indian independence movement in British- ruled India. Mao Zedong: Chiang Kai-shek was a Chinese political and military leader who served as the leader of the Republic of China between 1928 and 1975. He is known by his given name Chiang Chung-cheng or his courtesy name Chiang Chieh-shih in Standard Chinese. The Salt March: The Salt March, which took place from March to April 1930 in India, was an act of civil disobedience led by Mohandas Gandhi (1869-1948) to protest British rule in India. The Long March: The Long March was a military retreat undertaken by the Red Army of the Communist Party of China, the forerunner of the People's Liberation Army, to evade the pursuit of the Kuomintang army. Sun Yat-sen: Sun Yat-sen was a Chinese revolutionary, first president and founding father of the Republic of China, and medical practitioner. Emiliano Zapata: Emiliano Zapata Salazar was a leading figure in the Mexican Revolution, the main leader of the peasant revolution in the state of Chiapas, and the inspiration of the agrarian movement called Zapatismo. Kuomindang: The Guomindang (Kuomintang), the Nationalist Party of China. The name, Nationalist Party, in Mandarin is Guomindang in the pinyin romanization and Koumintang in the Wade-Giles romanization. Both words are pronounced the same. Fransico “ Pancho” Villa: Francisco Villa was a Mexican Revolutionary general and one of the most prominent figures of the Mexican Revolution. 1
