Rachel Golub 10-04-06 CHM 102 Lab Report Experiment 3: Tracking Zinc through Chemical Reactions INTRODUCTION: Combining materials that will cause a chemical reaction is an everyday  occurrence. These reacting components each produce a product. How much of  each component will determine exactly how much of the product will be  produced. In this experiment, I will be decomposing zinc carbonate through a  series of reactions to form zinc oxide. My goal in this experiment is to recover as  much ZnO as possible.  EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE: To start the experiment, I weighed both a 50mL beaker and a 4” test tube  and recorded the mass. Then I put approximately 0.5g of ZnCO into the test tube,  and recorded the exact mass. Using two 4” test tubes, I obtained 4mL of 3M HCl  and 2mL of NaOH. I used extreme caution when handling these liquids, as they  are known to irritate the skin and eyes.  After obtaining all my materials, I used an eyedropper to slowly add the  4mL of 3M HCl into the test tube containing the ZnCO 3 . After doing this, I  immediately saw bubbles of CO 2  coming out of the solution. My insoluble zinc  carbonate has now been converted to soluble zinc chloride, or ZnCl 2 . I then added  my 2mL of NaOH to the test tube containing the newly converted ZnCl 2 . I do this  to convert the zinc chloride to zinc hydroxide, or Zn(OH) 2 . After stirring the  mixture with a spatula, I found that my liquid had suddenly turned into a white  gelatinous precipitate, also known as zinc hydroxide.  Using a centrifuge, I placed my test tube in one of the holes. I have to make  sure that there is another test tube directly across from mine. The other test tube
